From the Elbe to the Pyreneans, Charlemagne is now the sole master of the Carolingian Franks. His brother Carloman, with whom he shared power since the death of their father Pepin, has just passed away. In the north and the east, the borders are under the threat of Widukind, the dangerous chief of the pagan Saxons, as well as that of the Slavs. In Italy, the Lombards do not hide their hostility to the return to unity of the Carolingians, in particular because of their strong ties with the Pope whose temporal realm lies since recently right in the middle of the penisula. On the other marches, the Britons and Basques are restive, and the Muslims lay in wait at the gates of the Pyrenean mountains. The active amir of Corduba, Abd al-Rahman, reigns over the major part of Spain, only facing the Christian kingdom of the Asturias in the North. Abd al-Rahman, sole surviver of the fallen Umayyads from Damascus, has escaped the slaughter ordered by the new Abbassids caliphs and founded his own indepedendant state in Andalousia. From Bhagdad, the great administrator Al-Mansur, the second Abbassid caliph, governs the Muslim world, from the Indus to the Atlantic, except some North African regions controlled by the Rustemids, adepts of the turbulent kharidjite sect. In the northeastern steppes, the arrival of the pagan Turks spells for future confrontations. Having stopped dead the Muslim conquests in the Caucasus, the recently converted to Judaism Khazars are nearing their peak. Emperor Constantine V, one the best byzantine sovereigns, is a zealous partisan of iconoclasm, a popular doctrine in Asia minor that forbids the veneration of images of the Christ, the Virgin and the Saints. He has successfully repulsed the Abbassids and the threatening Bulgars, but dangers are still there, as the Avars may still be a pain in the Balkans. In England, the energetic king Offa has ensured the domination of Mercia, but must keep a constant watch on his border against the raids from the Welsh.
